Welcome!

The NTA is making a technological leap forward this year.  We are excited to introduce our new e-newsletter, Turfgrass Management in the Pacific Northwest.  This e-newsletter will replace the magazine format that the NTA previously used.

There are several reasons for this change.  The magazine was becoming increasingly expensive and time-consuming to produce.  The e-newsletter will be more efficient in terms of cost and ease of production.  In addition, it will allow us to communicate more frequently with NTA members.

Special thanks to Peggy Hindahl, who has created the NTA website (www.nwturfgrass.net) and produces the e-newsletter.

62nd NTA Conference at Suncadia Resort—October 12-14, 2008

The NTA is excited to be holding its 62nd Annual Conference at Suncadia Resort in Roslyn, WA on October 12-14, 2008.  Suncadia has generously provided their excellent golf courses and lodging facilities at discounted rates for our members from the golf course/turf management industry.  Take advantage of this great opportunity to connect with fellow industry professionals at a beautiful, brand-new resort!  If staying in the lodge, reservations should be made by September 11 to guarantee room rates and availability.

OSU Announces New Assistant Professor Turfgrass Management

Oregon State University is pleased to introduce Dr. Rob Golembiewski as the new Assistant Professor in the Department of Horticulture.  Rob will be teaching and directing the Turf Management program.

Most recently Rob was a turf faculty member at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.  Rob received both his B.S. in Crop & Soil Science and M.S. in Botany & Plant Pathology from Michigan State University, and his Ph.D. in Agronomy from The Ohio State University.  Upon completion of his Ph.D., Rob spent two years as an Assistant Horticulture Professor at Montana State University and then worked one and a half years as the eastern U.S. turf & ornamental field development biologist for Dow AgroSciences. He then served as president and co-owner of Paramount Landscape located in Phoenix, Arizona for a period of six years. Rob’s research interests include turfgrass diseases, ecology, and integrated management programs.

On a personal note, Rob was born and raised in Michigan along with his ten siblings (yes 10!).  He has been married to his wife (Wendy) for almost nine years and has three children: Arin (12), Grace (7), and Max (2).  When he is not working or spending time with his family, Rob enjoys playing and watching sports.  He is very excited to see big time college football again in person—GO BEAVERS!

Online Resources from OSU & WSU Turf Programs

Since 1997, the NTA has provided financial support to the Turf Programs at Oregon State University, Washington State University – Puyallup and Washington State University – Pullman.  All three of these programs provide valuable resources to the turfgrass management industry in the PNW.  Take a look at their websites for information that may help you!

The website includes research reports, annotated power point presentations and various descriptive papers.  Once at the page, click on Research and Extension, and then click on turfgrass information.  That will bring up a menu showing all of the subheadings installed so far.

The website will introduce you to the people, academics, and research projects that comprise the WSU-Pullman Turfgrass Program.  To examine research papers, click on the Research tab on the left, this will take you to a list of projects.  Click on the project of interest to open the .pdf file.  Also check the homepage frequently, as we are continuously updating with some of the latest happenings in WSU Turf, as well as alumni accomplishments

This website gives you information about the turfgrass program at WSU-Puyallup. In the left hand column are headings for research and extension information. The website also includes directions on how to submit a turfgrass sample to the Diagnostic Clinic at Puyallup. There are e-mail addresses listed to contact us if there are any items that you can't find on the website.

OSU/WSU Turfgrass Field Day Reports

The OSU/WSU Turfgrass Field Day took place on August 19th at the Lewis Brown Farm in Corvallis.  For those that were unable to attend, the Field Day reports are available on the OSU Turf Management website.

Introducing GreenGolf™ USA.com

GreenGolfUSA.com is a new website dedicated to environmental stewardship for the golf industry in the Northwest.  All the resources you need to develop an Environmental Stewardship Plan for your golf course are available at GreenGolfUSA.com at no cost to you, making meeting environmental stewardship goals easier and faster for the superintendent.  GreenGolfUSA.com houses an online Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan development tool, a Best Management Practices (BMPs) generator, and other resources related to the OGCSA Environmental Stewardship Guidelines (the Guidelines) and the environment.

The GreenGolf™USA IPM tool is unique in the golf industry and was prepared using the Guidelines as its source.  Using the IPM tool at GreenGolfUSA.com, a superintendent can prepare an IPM Plan that accurately reflects the golf course conditions and standard of care.  Action thresholds, a primary basis for the IPM approach, are customizable to the way you operate.  The result is an IPM Plan that makes sense for your golf course.

A BMP Generator will be added to GreenGolfUSA.com in the next few months.  This tool will provide an easy way to document the BMPs that you apply at the golf course.  BMPs are organized into nine categories and the BMP Generator allows you to customize the documentation to specific conditions at your golf course.

T.U.R.F Project Updates: First Green

In 2008, the NTA has committed $55,000 to support turfgrass research, technicians, and education. The First Green Program was awarded a $5000 grant to launch new local First Green programs, host workshops for superintendents and teachers, and to initiate the program in Oregon. An update of their progress has been provided. You can also check out their website at www.thefirstgreen.org.

Glendale CC and host superintendent Steve Kealy, CGCS are set to host the 5th Annual First Green of WA Fundraising Tournament. Mark your calendars for Thursday, September 25th for a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.
