2009 Cooperative Turfgrass Research at Palouse Ridge Golf Club at WSU
Turfgrass researchers at Washington State University are trying to take full advantage of the research opportunities afforded by Palouse Ridge Golf Club and superintendent Todd Lupkes. Currently, four studies are being conducted at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. On the practice chipping green, an aeration recovery study evaluating the use of various aeration techniques in combination with the use of black or tan sand is in its second year. For a complete description of this study, please see the aeration recovery article found in this e-newsletter. On the practice hole used for the WSU golf team and P.E. golf classes, there are two studies. In the fairway of the practice hole there is an evaluation of the use of Tenacity in combination with Round-up for fairway renovation and preventative control of annual bluegrass. Herbicide treatments were applied last fall, and the study area was inter-seeded with perennial ryegrass. The preliminary results of this study are encouraging, as annual bluegrass populations seem to be reduced by several treatments. It will be interesting to track annual bluegrass populations through the fall to determine if this is a feasible way to reduce annual bluegrass populations in a renovation situation. On the green of the practice hole a study evaluating the use of manganese and combinations of manganese with either Banner Maxx or Heritage for take all patch control can be found. This study is in its second year, and conclusions are limited as take all patch pressure has been extremely low. On May 18, 2009, a new study was initiated with the aim of selective annual bluegrass control in a Kentucky bluegrass fairway. This study is located on the 9th fairway. Treatments include Tenacity, Velocity, and Prograss used alone and in combination. Results for the first year of this study will be available in late November. All research results from 2009 will be available at turf.wsu.edu/research in mid December 2009.
